| Private Tuition |
At that time I was studying in class seven. I used to live at my grandmother's house in Sirajganj. My father used to send ten or twenty rupees in my name in some months. I would go to the post office in that city to find out if my father had sent money. It would not cost more to stay and eat. Apart from that, Maternal Uncle got married while staying in that house. Maternal uncle's wife was brought home. I had a lot of sincerity with all of them. But even after him, if he went to school, he would get hungry during tiffin and it would cost money to buy it. At least Twenty Five Paisa of them a day would have been quite a tiffin.
So I thought if I do a tuition, how is it? I started trying around the house. That's what works. Delbar uncle next door offered to teach his son. I said if my uncles knew, they would rebuke me. He said you would take my son to the inner room and I would lock the main gate from the outside.
In those days, private tutoring meant taking money for private tutoring was considered a shame task. I also began to teach, hiding in fear. A month later I received a salary of six rupees. That money was very useful to me. At least now I have four annas of money. And a lot could be found in four annas.
I remember going shopping with my Maternal uncle once a week. I used to go to the market behind him. I used to have a basket in my hand. Then the rainy season. Lots of fish in the fish market. In those days fish was not sold by weight. There is a small species of Rui fish which is called Lowari fish in Sirajganj area. That lowari fish used to be distributed. Suppose this is divided by one kg. And the price of that share was four annas. We may have taken a run. Others may be taking other portions. This is how fish was bought and sold.
My private Student was Shahidul Islam. I took the SSC exam in 1974. With the test I moved to my own house in Saidpur. After some years I heard that Shahidul has passed matriculation and his father used to work in WAPDA where he got a job as a line man.
It was very difficult to steal from my grandmother's house and teach privately. Because if any of the uncles knew, their respect would be lost. It is not a good thing to teach privately, to teach secretly to him.
I don't know if he is still employed.
